What's Hot?

Circles on pages. But it sure can be hard to handstitch around a circle and have your results look even. So here's how:

  1. Temporarily attach a piece of tissue or other see-through paper on top of the circle.
  2. By feel, trace the outline of the circle. This does NOT have to be perfect.
  3. Using a Centering Ruler such as the Zero Hero from C-Thru Ruler Company (available at www.dejaviews.com) evenly space dots about 1/2 inch inside your circle outline.
  4. Stitch the outline THROUGH your tissue paper pattern.
  5. Rip away the pattern. (You might need to use tweezers to get the little pieces of paper.)

See how this looks. And note the cool felt letters I made!

Going Green with Scrapbooking

I save ribbon from everything and everywhere. Which is probably why my pajama bottoms are so droopy. (I took the ribbon out right away.) In this layout, the ribbon all came from "found" sources.

These hand-colored ornaments can yours by emailing me at savetales@aol.com and putting HOLIDAY in the subject line. We'll get them out as fast as we can.

Where in the World Is Joanna?

I might be at an event near you. To see where I'll be signing books and giving presentations go to www.booktour.com. I'd love to meet each and every one of you. Be sure to tell me you get my ezine, okay?

And yes, I've posted a partial schedule for 2009!

Fabulous Freebies

  • I'll send you a file with the lovely hand-colored ornaments, a sleigh, a reindeer, several snowmen and more. Email me at savetales@aol.com and put HOLIDAY in the subject line. (We'll do this as fast as possible!)
  • Follow me on Twitter for journaling prompts! Yes, get your journaling juices flowing by going to www.twitter.com/joannaslan and signing up to follow me. I'll be posting sentence stems (that is, parts of sentences) to get you writing more in your scrapbooks.
  • Want your own Paper, Scissors, Death bookmark? Send a stamped, self-addressed letter-size envelope (must be 6 inches or longer) to Joanna Campbell Slan, 12033 Dorsett Road, Maryland Heights, MO 63043

Personal Note

I know the world looks a little bleak right now. These are the times that test our faith. If you drive east on Highway 40 near my home any morning, for a few seconds the road disappears! The sun will blind you. All you can do is hold your car to a steady course and trust-and have FAITH-that the whole world hasn't disappeared. But you can't slam on the brakes. Instead, you must move forward with confidence. ("Con" is Latin for "with" and "fidere" is Latin for "to trust.") You're in a blind spot caused by the rising sun.

Experienced drivers know this is only a temporary problem.

I'm old enough to know that the economy can really stink, and that finances can get really tough, and that the hard times won't last forever. But while they do, you have to have faith. You have to trust that good is still a part of your life. Then you have to work hard to focus on the good, or you'll miss it.

So have faith. Gather your loved ones in your arms. Hug them tightly. Those are our realest, truest riches. And even a bad economy can't destroy what we have in our hearts.

May you find true happiness this holiday season--

Joanna
